METALLICA Live at the Old Waldorf, San Francisco 18-10-1982

What a bootleg! Fuck, dunno how this one got stashed away out of sight for so long. Listen to this and it's no wonder how Metallica cultivated a fanbase that would eclipse all other Thrash bands'. There are so many demos and bootlegs of Metallica performing Metal Up Your Ass in prototype form, and James never nails the opening line to Hit The Lights in any of them. I guess at this stage they'd figured out that San Francisco was the place to be, while the big hair bullshit was ruling Los Angeles. Look, people: whatever you're doing with your life, San Francisco is the place to do it. That's why a small apartment there costs $2K+ pcm, fukinel.

Like Exodus around the same time, these guys are raw and scrappy and hitting duff notes and it's awesome. At this early stage, with Dave Mustaine and Ron McGoverny, I've got no idea if James Hetfield was playing guitar. Maybe he was an they didn't switch his amp on for this show, I really don't hear a second guitar. Like that Exodus demo, this is a rare chance to hear a classic band with a formative lineup. Get stuck in!
